Back in the 1950s, a man could lie on the beach in his trunks, eat whatever he fancied, and no one accused him of overspending. These days? We get told off for buying lattes and fish and chips.

So in Newquay, we tried something different: a kind of Cornish tapas. No sit-down meals, just small bites from a few spots — a pasty here, a coffee there, a craft lager with a million-pound view… and even a £5 toilet thrown in for good measure.

Along the way, we bump into some fictional 1950s beachgoers who’ve got their own thoughts on food, prices, and how seaside holidays used to be.
